Postseason Roster 2.0

The writers here at TYU have discussed the Yankees’ postseason roster at various points over the last few weeks, and I will take another stab at it here. The final prediction will come after the Yankees complete their final game of the regular season. I believe that the Yankees should carry 14 hitters and 11 pitchers.

14 Hitters
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
SS Derek Jeter
3B Alex Rodriguez
C Jorge Posada
LF Johnny Damon
CF Melky Cabrera
RF Nick Swisher
DH Hideki Matsui
OF Brett Gardner
C Jose Molina

Those 11 are definitely going to be on the roster. If healthy, Jerry Hairston Jr. will make the club as well. That leaves 2 spots for Cervelli, Guzman, Hinske, and Pena. Hinske is the only power bat available off the bench, and is likely to make the team. There is no reason for the club to carry 3 catchers, leaving Cervelli out in the cold. Being that Guzman brings a plus plus skill to the table in the form of speed, and that Pena and Hairston seem redundant, I believe Guzman will nab the final spot. So that leaves the final 3 hitters as:

IF Hairston
OF Guzman
IF/OF Hinske

11 Pitchers

LHP CC Sabathia
RHP A.J. Burnett
LHP Andy Pettitte
RHP Mariano Rivera
RHP Phil Hughes
LHP Phil Coke
RHP Alfredo Aceves
RHP Joba Chamberlain

These 8 are almost certainties. Joba Chamberlain was on the bubble for a while, but it seems that he performs well in big spots and proved his mettle this weekend against Boston. If David Robertson is healthy, he is likely to nab a spot. This leaves 2 spots for Brian Bruney, Chad Gaudin, and Damaso Marte. Marte is likely to make the roster as the second lefty in the pen, leaving Bruney and Gaudin. While Bruney does seem redundant now that the Yankees have Joba, Aceves, Robertson, and Hughes as righty relievers, Gaudin’s value as a long man is also limited by the presence of Joba and Aceves as guys who can provide multiple innings. This is the toughest decision on the roster, but I would go with Gaudin at this point. He is throwing the ball better, and can be used either as a long man or to matchup with tough righties. If Bruney pitches well over the last few games, he may change this decision.

This leaves us with a final 3 of:

  1. Moshe don’t you think they will tinker with the roster for each round?

Marte imo only makes the ALDS if the Yankees face the Twins. The Tigers don’t have the lefty bats to force the Yankees to carry 2 lefty relievers.

    • I think he makes it regardless. Girardi has been preaching about having two lefties for a while now. He might use each of them only against one lefty (Granderson, Huff). I think that they may only carry 10 pitchers in the ALDS, and then go to 11 for the ALCS, in which case Pena or Cervelli makes it in the 1st round.

        • Girardi said that they’ll construct the roster without factoring in the team that they’re playing. Rather, they’ll focus on what’s best for their own team. I don’t know if that’s true or not but it’s something to consider.

          • I believe he is truthful when saying that Chris I think he really believes they are the best team in baseball therefore they match up well with every team because they are so strong.

  2. I think Marte makes it regardless. I don’t understand why people are seriously doubting this. If anything Coke should be left off if they only take one lefty. Moshe, your roster looks pretty good. I think there is a possibility that Pena could make it over Guzman, but that’s nitpicking.

    • How??? Coke has actually gotten righties out and letfies out and good ones at that, especially considering he got out Mauer and Morneau out back to back 3 games in a row he will make it over Marte, who has been god awful since we have had him, even though he has been slightly better lately.

      • Marte has been great since returning from the DL. I think fans need to give him a break. His ineffective 2008 can be attributed to injuries and he was also injured this year. He has always been able to get lefties and righties out — Phil Coke, on the other hand, should be a lefty-lefty guy — and therefore he should be in the bullpen, I think, come October.

        • Marte hasn’t kept his fastball up from appearance to appearance and 2 of his last 3 appearances were ineffective, last time out he allowed a base runner with out recording an out. I think there is room for skepticism on if he his healed fully or not.

  3. I gotta tell you, though I was high on Robertson last year when some others weren’t and still like him, now that everyone has jumped on his bandwagon, I’m not as high on him, certainly ont as a guaranteed guy.He throws a 92-93 straight fastball and has a very good curve but is not going to strike guys out in playoff situations at the rate he does in mop up and 7th innings regular season.Addiitonally Marte hasn’t looked good from the day we signed him.
I’m a Coke man and think he’ll step up in big spots, even though he’s given up some long balls and I’m very reluctant to give up on Bruney who’s throwing it 97 and as soon as he regains command again is a REAL strikeout pitcher.
If Bruney can show he’s back to being Bruney this week, I think he has to be on the roster.
He can blow away a twam for a crtical inning when he’s right nad he’s getting close to “Right” now.

  4. I like having an extra long reliever to eat innings in Gaudin, but I think in a short series the Yanks will forego that luxury. In the ALCS they will definitly carry 11 pitchers and I can see Gaudin added there. I think the Yanks will definitly take 2 lefties (not sure its necessary but for the last 20 years we have had managers that love the lefty to lefty match-ups and go through releivers like water), which means its between Robertson/Bruney/Gaudin for one spot on a 10 man pitching roster and two spots on an 11 man one. Personally I think they should go 11 and take Gaudin and Robertson. Bruney is on the bubble and needs to convince JG this week (Boston helpped).

    • That you can only use with a lead of 3 or less in the 9th inning or a tied game in the 9th inning… You need two lefties getting to Mo.

  5. The other Chris H: That you can only use with a lead of 3 or less in the 9th inning or a tied game in the 9th inning… You need two lefties getting to Mo.

They have to be good lefties though.I have little problem pitching Mariano for 2 innings in the playoffs and WS.
Hughes can close if necessary the next day and C.C. can pitch 9, he isn’t tired.
