Jermaine Dye is a terrible outfielder

Over the weekend, there was some chatter about the Yanks pursuing Jermaine Dye. Let’s get one thing straight: If the Yanks DO sign Dye on the cheap, he won’t need to bring his glove as he’s not going to “take over” LF ahead of Gardner. And he’s not going to bump Swisher from right to left, either.

Why?

  1. He’s a TERRIBLE outfielder
  2. He hasn’t played more than 1 game in LF since 1996. That’s, like, a long time ago.
  3. His RF “ability” has bottomed out to the point of being consistently awful. Not bad, but awful.

Here’s the data:

So no, despite what some might say (looking at you here), Dye is NOT a quality rightfielder. And that vaunted great arm of his? Not true. Negative runs above average. And his range? Consistently nonexistant.

Over the last four years, Dye has averaged a -22.2 UZR/150. AWFUL.

Maybe he can still hit. Let him DH some, platoon with Nick, if need be. But this isn’t about Dye’s ability to rebound from a bad 2nd half of 2009; it’s about his inability to field an outfield position and the laughable idea that he’d bump someone out of a starting outfield spot.
