Damaso Marte relieved Pettitte in the bottom of the fifth, making his spring debut. He immediately gave up two singles before Jayson Werth parked a three-run homer in the stands, giving the Phillies a lead they would not relinquish. Amaury Sanit came in for Marte and got the next three batters out, but the damage was done. Joba pitched the rest of the game for the Yankees, showing a vast improvement over his previous outings and putting himself squarely back in the mix for the fifth starter position.
After getting two quick outs to start the sixth, Bocock hit a blooper behind second that Kevin Russo could not quite reach. Wise then hit a RBI single before being thrown out by Cervelli while attempting to steal second. Joba kept the Phillies scoreless and hitless during the seventh, eighth and ninth (despite being up 6-2, the Phillies consented to sending batters up in the bottom of the ninth so Joba could get another inning of work).
Bronx Cheers:
Marte: It was not a good debut for Marte who gave up four hits, three earned runs and a homerun without recording an out. To add insult to injury (or perhaps more accurately, injury to insult) Ryan Howard sent a line-drive back to the mound, hitting Marte in the lower back and ending his day.
Alex Rodriguez: A-Rod made some good defensive plays today, but he did not contribute offensively, going 0-3 and striking out once.
Ramiro Pena: Pena went 0-3 and left four runners on base.
Curtain Calls:
Cervelli: The young backstop went 3-3 with a RBI and threw out a runner at second. So far, it looks like that new helmet isn’t bothering him.
That’s it for the recap today, stay safe and enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day. I will leave you with my favorite Irish Blessing:
As you slide down the bannister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction!
