Yankees, Martin, table extension talks

Via ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand, the Yankees and catcher Russell Martin have put talks about a contract extension on hold until after the 2012 season. The two sides were apparently too far apart in terms of desired compensation to make any discussions productive, with the Yankees only offering Martin $20 million over 3 years, according to Jon Heyman. That seems like a pretty reasonable price to me, but the AAV of that contract would be less than what Martin will make in 2012, so it’s not hard to see why he didn’t want lose his first opportunity at the open market for such an offer. Personally I think letting Martin play out the season before offering a multi-year contract is the best idea anyway, given his general trend towards less productivity with the bat. In the not unlikely event he can’t replicate his power numbers from 2011 it could very well make more teams leery of a long-term commitment to Martin and make the price even cheaper. Of course, if he has a big year you risk having the price driven way up, but it doesn’t sound like Martin is interested in taking much of a discount right now anyway.

I love him, but I agree the team shouldn't be in rush to extend Martin's contract. There is just little to no advantage of signing him now. But if he does poorly this season, the Yankees will likely let him pass. If he does well, then he'll have earned a new contract.

That said, I hope he does well this year (and would feel the same way if he were playing for any other team). Martin is my kind of player.

Just a suggestion: How about a post speculating the batting order and starting rotation? I know its very early, but it could just be a preliminary type of article.

I've got no idea what order they'll break the rotation in, but the lineup will probably look like this:

      Jeter
      Granderson
      Cano
      A-Rod
      Tex
      Swisher
      Ibanez/Jones
      Martin
      Gardner

If I have to take a wild guess at the rotation I'll say:

      Sabathia
      Nova
      Pineda
      Kuroda
      Hughes

i like the idea of switching Cano and Tex, but will the Yanks actually do that? In your lineup, the 2 through 5 hitters would be a very very tough stretch for any pitcher. And I guess since the Yanks trusted Nova to be one of their main starters in the playoffs, they'll trust him to be the Number 2 pitcher, but I was thinking it might safer to go with Kuroda as number 2 since Nova is still young.
