Yanks Pick Up Their First Win Of The West Coast Trip

Everyone can exhale and relax because the Yankees have finally won a game on this seven-game West Coast road trip. It certainly took long enough and thankfully for them, the Seattle Mariners are not the Oakland A’s.

There would be no late heroics, no walk-off for the home team and the Yankees were the ones high fiving on the field following the game.

The newest Yankee, Ichiro Suzuki, walked up to the plate for his first at-bat in a Yankee uniform in the top of the third inning – he was batting eighth, got a nice ovation and then slapped a single up the middle on a 0-1 pitch from Kevin Millwood.

He followed that up with his 16th stolen base of the season but was left stranded after Russell Martin and Derek Jeter failed to get him home.

Seattle struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the third. Dustin Ackley walked, stole a base and then scored on a single by John Jaso.

The Yankees were held scoreless for the first three innings but were finally able to get to Millwood who held them to one run on three hits on May 13. After a strikeout by Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez hit a double on an 0-2 offering from Millwood, Robinson Cano followed with a walk and Mark Teixeira hit a double of his own which scored A-Rod and tied the score at one.

Raul Ibanez singled and scored Cano to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead and Andruw Jones joined the party with a single which scored Teixeira. They were up 3-1 after the fourth and that score would remain until the eighth when Rodriguez hit a long home run to left center.

Rodriguez who was victimized by line drives in Oakland finished 2-4 with an RBI tonight.

Hiroki Kuroda earned his 10th victory of the year thanks to a strong seven inning performance in which he only gave up the lone run on three hits and struck out nine. David Robertson came in the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning with two strike outs and Rafael Soriano had a 1-2-3 inning of his own and picked up his 25th save of the season.

It was a nice bounce back game for the Yankees after a dismal weekend in Northern California.

  1. Ichiro Suzuki? Please. He is one guy I never wanted on my team and I want him even less now that he’s regressed down to a scrub level performance. As much as it pains me I will have to at least fake rooting for him to do well for the sake of the team but I would not be at all be unhappy to see him go 0-for-a-month and get DFAd. This is kind of PR move the Boss would have made in the bad old days (except he would have traded Banuelos and Williams for him). Uggghhh!
