Yankees Acquire RHP Shawn Kelley

Just in case you missed the news last night, the Yankees made a move!

From the MLB Trade Rumors site:

The Yankees have acquired right-hander Shawn Kelley from the Mariners in exchange for outfielder Abraham Almonte, according to Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune (onTwitter).  The Mariners designated Kelley for assignment on Thursday to make roster space for Kelly Shoppach.

Kelley, 28, appeared in 47 games for the Mariners in 2012, posting a 3.25 ERA with 9.1 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, and a 28.8% ground ball rate in 44 1/3 innings.  The right-hander will earn $930K in 2013.

Meanwhile, Almonte will give the M’s some much needed minor league depth at the centerfielder position and can also play the corners.  The 23-year-old spent last season in Double-A, hitting .276/.350/.392 in 78 games.

Reactions to this move from various bloggers, writers and the like, see it as a positive for the Yankees: an extra bullpen arm is always good to have and Almonte will have more of a chance to earn playing time for Seattle than he would with the Yankees.

Considering some folks had Almonte as the 6th OF Yankee prospect Id' say he was expendable. It will be interesting to see Kelley competing for a bullpen spot. My guess is if he makes it north with the club it will be at Rapada's expense. But we'll see.

      I don't think it'll be at Rapada's expense — Kelley's a righty, and Rapada's a lefty, so they're competing for different spots.

If he makes the club, it's a bad sign. Look at the guy's home/road splits. He's lights out at Safeco and gets lit up everywhere else. There's a reason the Mariners DFA'd him, as Seattle is the *best* location for him to pitch effectively.

I'm just not sure the Yankees need to head north with 2 loogy's (Logan and Rapada) especially if Kelley shows the Yankees something in camp.

  2. I'm happy for Almonte – I saw him play last year for Trenton some and was impressed, but clearly with some of the other outfielders the Yankees have coming up he was a good piece to move. Hopefully it works out for the Yankees and Abe.
