Some baseball links from around the web: Dogs, the WBC and other assorted goodies

While there is a lull in the action i.e. it’s March, it’s Spring Training and there are only so many things you can say about Robinson Cano‘s upcoming contract negotiations, I thought I’d share some goodies from around the baseball blogosphere.

First up, my friend Michael Clair, who writes for a bunch of places including The Platoon Advantage, has his own blog called Old Time Family Baseball where he posts some of the funniest stuff you’ll ever see and today’s post is no exception. He takes us back to 1993 when baseball Milk Bone got together for a collection of baseball cards featuring baseball players and their dogs. Some of my favorites are Todd Zeile‘s, Rob Dibble‘s – mostly for his sweater – and current Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi‘s cards.

Take a look, I promise it’s worth it.

Another friend, Tara Franey, a colleague of mine at Aerys Sports who is the head Cincinnati Reds writer, wrote two previews for the WBC. She wrote about both Pool A and Pool B so far. The previews are detailed and you will find everything you ever needed to know about the WBC.

***I interrupt this post to give you the following news bulletin: It has been reported by a flurry of tweets from the Yankee beat writers that General Manager Brian Cashman will be jumping out of a plane with the Army Golden Knights Monday in Miami. I don’t even know what to say about that.

Craig Calcaterra of Hardball Talk is in Arizona for Spring Training and he reported that the first song played during Angels’ practice was “The Look Of Love” by ABC. If you’re an 80′s music lover like me, you’ll appreciate that. If you’re not, you’re probably wondering what I’m even taking about.

Speaking of Hardball Talk, in case you didn’t hear the news, Bill Baer, otherwise known as @CrashburnAlley on Twitter is the newest addition to the site’s impressive list of authors.

And finally, I thought this was amusing: It’s video of a Korean baseball brawl.

Happy Friday!

  1. 1) Love The Platoon Advantage. Mike and Bill, good guys both. The Common Man used to contribute here, back in the day. Now get off mah lawn.

    2) Re: Cashman… um, yeah. Unless it's for charity, I don't care. Can he take Hank and pack his chute with marbles?

    3) I hate Craig, only in an "I'm completely jealous" kinda way.

    4) ABC is awful and I'm an '80's kid, too. Them and Spandau Ballet can ride with Hank and his marble-laden chute to the ground on the express ride. And The Fixx.

    5) Couldn't be happier for @crashburnalley. He was the lone Phillies blog on ESPN's SSN when I joined. 2009 was ESPN's first year for the SSN and the Yanks and Phillies battled. I have the utmost respect for Bill and am thrilled he's gotten this chance.

Hey, don't dis ABC and the Fixx. Or Human League, Tears for Fears or Alphaville for that matter.
