Today’s Yankees news in a nutshell

So this is what’s dominating the baseball world today: The fact that the Yankees are so desperate for players, they’re trying to coax people out of retirement.

I was really hoping Cashman was just trolling the beat writers but it seems he wasn’t and that he was actually being serious. But why stop with Derrek Lee and Chipper Jones? Why not try to get Scott Brosius and Bernie Williams back?

If the Yankees could bring someone back from retirement or, as a goof, bring someone back from the dead, who would you want to see?

Personally I’d want to see Mickey Mantle.

Mantle played some shortstop, so his signing could affect Nunez's chances. Diaz would be pushed out too as the #4 outfielder. I have Mantle in the #7 position, until he has a couple of weeks to work out the rigor mortis. Wonder whether he would take a contract with a bonus for hitting 600 HRs.

  2. Norm says:

Chipper Jones? Really? Hell, why don't they just talk Scott Brocius (sp) into making a comeback? I know he hasn't played in awhile, but at least we know what he looks like in pinstripes.

  3. Ramondo says:

Mantle wouldn't work cause he didn't play 1ST or 3RD. Since they are reaching, why not give Troy Glaus a look at. He wanted to come back and play. A minor league deal won't kill them.

    • Norm says:

Actually, Mantle did play some 1B at the end of his career, when his knees got too bad to play CF on a regular basis. Although, if memory serves, he wasn't that good at the position. Don't know if it was due to age or unfamiliarity with the position.

    • Steve Senken says:

The Mick played first in 1968. Since we're playing make believe, let's assume that his knees were fine and wouldn't be playing in excruciating pain. Assuming his legs were sound I'd take him over any other player in the history of the baseball.

    • Magilla Gorilla says:

Mantle played a lot of 1B at the end of his career. Joe Pepitone took over for Bill Skowon at 1B in 1963. Then, as Mantle aged, he and Pepitone flipped positions for a few years. Mantle had 144 games at 1B in each of 1967 and 1968.

Mantle may be the answer. CF/1B/SS

  4. Rickey Henderson. Period.

Maybe give Manny Ramirez a shout, it would certainly take some of the PED heat off A-Rod.

I'd take Mickey in a heart beat having seen him play when I was a kid. But only if it was the 1952 through 1964 Mickey, unfortunately he stayed just a few years to long with 1965 starting his decline years. But as a young Yankee fan at the time there was NO baseball player more exciting to watch at least that's my bias opinion.

  7. Hone99 says:

Why not Chipper Jones? He retired in his prime just last year, could probably be coaxed for a few million, and he'd only be a short-term solution until A-Rod came back anyway. You guys are being funny, when it's a legitimate thought to consider.

    • yankeerudy says:

Even if he was open to the idea, by the time Chipper got into playing shape Tex would be back. Besides, isn't it enough of a crime against nature to have Ichiro and Youkilis in pinstripes?

      • Derpy says:

Not to mention, Chipper clearly is not a money focused guy. He wanted to play his whole career for the braves and he never asked for big money contracts, which isn't to say he didn't get paid well, but he could have gotten much more if he wanted to. Also, Chipper hates NYC.

    • Derpy says:

There is a 0.000000000000000000000000000% chance Chipper Jones signs with the Yankees.

  8. uyf1950 says:

If you were strickly looking for someone to replace Tex at 1st base and it could be any Yankee or for that matter pretty much any ballplayer I have to go hands down with The Iron Horse – Lou Gehrig.

  9. hawaii dave says:

Sure, the Mick was great…but if you can bring them back from the dead, how can you not want the Babe and Lou Gehrig?

  10. Mark says:

The babe play some outfield and the occasionally he can pitch a game.

  11. chris says:

Go younger! No Lee. Give Mustellier a shot. Hell, suck it up and put Nuneeeeeee out there at 3b with Youk at first before you reach for more Geritol.

  12. Derpy says:

    Moises Alou, obviously.

  13. ProfRobert says:

Danny Cater — he split his time in pinstripes between 1st and 3rd, so he'd be perfect for this season. Then after the season ends, we can trade him to the Red Sox for a closer to replace Mo.

  14. Tom says:

How about Yogi Berra – he was a winner.

  15. Bob Arctor says:

I'd say Lou Gehring, because we could use that bat at first, but there's still no cure for Lou Gehring's Disease. I say we reanimate "Jumping" Joe Dugan. Great glove at 3rd and played some shortstop.

  16. Bob Arctor says:

I mean, if you bring back Gehrig, and he goes down in the middle of the season with Lou Gehrig's Disease–well, you're back to square one.

  17. Frank S. says:

Johnny Damon must be loving this (not).

  18. visit site says:

Yeah no amount of money in the world could bring Chipper back; otherwise, the Braves would have him.
