Game Thread: Yankees at Orioles

It’s another night game, so we’re doing another game thread. Feel free to comment as much as you’d like and be sure to be nice to one another.

Stacey doesn’t want to have to put anyone into time out. (Kidding.)

Here’s tonight’s Yankees lineup that will be facing Jair Jurrjens:
Brett Gardner CF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Lyle Overbay 1B
Brennan Boesch RF
Ben Francisco LF
Jayson Nix 2B
Thomas Neal DH
Ronnier Mustelier 3B
Bobby Wilson C

RHP David Phelps

Robinson Cano was a scratch. According to Sweeny Murti, he’s fighting a stomach bug.

Tonight’s game is being broadcast from Ed Smith Stadium, the Orioles’ spring home and it will be shown on MLB Network in New York. Check your cable provider for the channel number.

Gotta love this line up! Go Yankees! Or whatever the hell they are!

    • Mike Eder

Love seeing Mustelier getting a ton of AB's. Looks like he has a chance, considering the current lack of depth at the corners.

      • Phil C

Agree. I guess the decision will have to be whether the Yanks want to go with only one back-up infielder until Jeter can play most days. That could last 2 to 4 weeks, I'd guess.

  2. Phil C

Scary! I hate (HATE I tell you) seeing a pitcher get hit by a batted ball! That seems to happen a lot more often over the past few years.

  3. Mike Eder

So I guess Mustelier isn't playing.

    • Phil C

I'm watching game on MLBN and getting the O's announcers, they said Musty was hurt, but not what was wrong.

  4. Mike Eder

    Sore right knee.

    • Chris

Girardi said Musty told him his knee "cracked" running in pre-game, doesn't sound good but he'll see the doctor tomorrow.

    I hate K/CS DPs.

    • Phil C

WOW!!! More upper- than lower-case letters!

    • Phil C

I hate them too, but only when they're agin us.

      • Professor Longnose

        Definitely.

Hey, does IntenseDebate remember your name and E-mail? I have to click it in every time.

        • Phil C

          Obviously I'm SPECIAL!

  6. Phil C

Even the O's announcers are raving about how well Phleps is throwing tonight.

    • Professor Longnose

They’re also howling at the moon.

  7. Professor Longnose

    Overbay got a hit!

  8. Professor Longnose

    Phleps totally lost it.

    • Phil C

Phelps must have come on to pitch the 5th inning.

  9. Phil C

Well, that's it for me tonight. I'm slowly getting stretched out for the regular season. Should me ready to go longer Friday afternoon. Chat y'all later.

Later Phil. Anyone think that Phelps 2 seam fastball looks a bit like Bartolos? Except Phelps doesnt have the velocity (he usually sits 92) and has actual off speed stuff. I like him as a back to mid of the rotation starter going forward. Hope the Yankees do too, and dont hurt his development by bouncing him around to the bullpen. Put a guy who isnt as important to the future there. I realize that guy probably wont be as good as Phelps was last year but I think Phelps is too important to the teams future. Hes more important as a successful starter than a swingman. Brett Marshall, Chien Ming Wang (he pitched out of the pen for the Nats) or Adam Warren should be ticketed as the "long man" if the team insists on having one

Its a little different than our old stomping grounds but good to see phil and Prof here.

    • What's old is new. Welcome either way!

Yeah itll be fun. Im a big fan of Phelps and Nova as starters going forward. I dont think they can be aces, 1st and even 2s are asking a lot. But Phelps strikes guys out and doesnt walk many, shows good control. Nova has excellent stuff if he can learn to harness it more. Id rather not mess with the development of those guys just to strengthen to pen. Plenty of really good pen guys in the minors. Let them go do the job.

Speaking of intriguing pen options if Betances fails as a starter what are the odds that they try and salvage him as a pen guy? I root for the kid, would be a nice story coming out of the Bronx to pitch for his favorite team

Is it good or bad that the debate the next few days is going to be Boesch or Francisco for the 4th OF spot?

  13. Michael

Would Boesch have to clear waivers to be sent down to AAA? I think they both have options

    • Gene

francisco is not on the 40-man roster so he could be sent down, im not sure if boesch would have to pass waivers

      • Michael

I was hoping Boesch got a shot at being the right fielder. Move Ichiro to left bc hes better defensively and see what Boesch can do. Hes only 27 and has had one good and one bad season. So just roll the dice on the kid. Could end up being a nice power option but alas we have Vernon Wells.

        • Gene

They're pretty much grasping at straws with all three of them, might as well ride the hot hand until Granderson gets back. But I do like a lefty with some power hitting in Yankee Stadium.

  14. Michael

Hes more of a question mark than Francisco and Wells which I actually like. Mainly bc Boesch has upside at 27 and we know what Wells of the sub 300OBP and Francisco are all about. But it doesnt matter now, Boesch is probably going to be in the minors. Heck id put them both in the minors and have Melky Mesa be the 4th guy. If im going to have a 4th outfielder I want him to have the ability to play every OF position

    • Gene

Yeah but Melky is good for at least 2 K per game, without the Granderson power. All three starters have the ability to play center so it doesnt really hurt much to have a corner guy on the bench.
