What a difference a year makes

As I was sitting in the upper deck of Yankee Stadium yesterday, I was struck by how different the lineup was from last year at this time. Yes, the Yankees have a ton of injuries and this isn’t a new development but seeing names like Brennan Boesch and Lyle Overbay in the lineup was just so amusing to me.

So I thought it would be funny to compare the lineup on 4/28/12 to 4/28/13.

April 28, 2012 was a Saturday and the Yankees were facing the Detroit Tigers in the Bronx. Unfortunately, Freddy Garcia was starting for the Yankees and just like the previous Saturday when he gave up a bunch of runs to the Red Sox in Fenway, he gave up six runs in one and one-third innings of work.

Here’s the Yankee lineup that faced Drew Smyly last April.

Yesterday, the 2013 Yankees took on the Toronto Blue Jays and R.A. Dickey at the Stadium and this time, with a patchwork lineup, including Bosech, who was a Tiger and in their starting lineup last April 28, the Yankees came out on top.

On Saturday, I was at a baby shower and the father of the baby, who is a huge Mets fan, hugged and kissed me ‘hello’ and said, “Man, your Yankees are unbelievable.” I said, “You’re right, they are.” Of course, we were all hoping that the Yankees would be able to “keep their heads above water” until the regulars started coming back but I think they’ve definitely exceeded expectations.

As of this post, the Yankees are 15-9 overall and in second place in the AL East. Yes, it’s early and yes, things can change but right now, we should all be happy with this start, no matter who is in the lineup.
