Was anyone else at the game on September 21, 2008?
I was sitting in Box 623, Row C, Seats 5-8. I obviously wasn’t in all four seats. I was in Seat 8 which was my usual spot. Those seats were my home every Sunday home game, every Opening Day, every Old Timers’ Day and in the early years as a season ticket holder, Memorial Day and Fourth of July. I had those seats from 1999-2008.
We (me, my brother, my parents and numerous friends) had a lot of good times in those seats.
I saw a few walkoffs – home runs and base hits, my brother watched David Cone‘s perfect game, we saw some stinkers and we saw some nail biters. I took my friend from Japan to his first Yankee game in 2003 and he got to see his favorite player, Hideki Matsui, hit a home run against the Mets.
I can’t believe it’s been five years since that last game. A lot has happened since September 2008 both for me personally and to the Yankees.
There are some days when I get nostalgic and miss the old girl. I miss the filthy bathrooms and the long concession lines. I miss the dark tunnels and the old ramps. I miss the noise and I miss feeling like I was sitting on top of the field even though I was in the upper deck.
And don’t get me wrong, I love the new Stadium but there are times when I wish I could go back to the old place one last time.
Just in case you forgot, the Yankees did win that last game. Andy Pettitte got the win and Mariano Rivera closed out the game even though it wasn’t a save situation. Come on, would you have it any other way?
Other notes from that game:
- Jason Giambi had the last hit
- Jose Molina hit the last home run
- Robinson Cano had the last RBI
- Brett Gardner was the last to cross home plate
So if you were there that night, you can share your memories in the comments. Or just use this as tonight’s “open thread.”
