As soon as I saw the headline from Bryan Hoch of MLB.com which said, “Girardi is reportedly ‘torn’ between Yankees, Cubs,” one song popped into my head. No, wait, actually two songs popped into my head. First up was Natalie Imruglia’s 1998 hit, “Torn” because you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing that song 15 years ago and then in a funny twist because Girardi is actually torn between two ball clubs and two major cities, Mary MacGregor’s “Torn Between Two Lovers” also made an appearance in my head.
I know, what?
Anyway, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Girardi is torn between accepting the Yankees’ lucrative deal and listening to what the Cubs may offer.
He wants to formally explore the Cubs’ opening after weeks of back-channel feelers, according to sources. But industry sources familiar with the negotiations say the Yankees have made it clear their offer might not remain in play if he chooses to talk to other teams first.
It’s not like the Cubs are only waiting on Girardi’s decision, they’ve already interviewed both Manny Acta and A.J. Hinch. They also have other candidates in mind but it seems Girardi would be the big catch if they could get him.
As of late Monday, Girardi still hadn’t reached a decision but the longer he takes, the more it seems he’ll be leaving New York.
