Quick hits: Torre’s number retired, Brian Kenny’s ideas for the Yankees & et tu Grandy?

The Yankees announced this morning that they will be retiring Joe Torre‘s #6 which leaves Derek Jeter‘s #2 as the only single digit uniform number not retired. Of course, that will change in a few years and pretty soon the Yankees will have to start doling out fractions or triple digits to their players. “Now batting number 114, Derek Jeter, Jr.!”

Late last night, Brian Kenny of MLB Network, tweeted some rules for the Yankees and how they can improve the team this offseason and in the future.

Among my favorites were:

They are the Yankees, dammit, and this whole ‘showing restraint’ thing is already getting old. Kenny also brings up a good point with the minor league pitching. What is going on down there, guys? Again, you’re the Yankees! Fix this stuff already! And I really love the idea of Old School Saturdays. Having just the organ and PA would be so much fun and would take me back to my childhood. My favorite thing as a kid was screaming, “CHARGE!” as loud as I could at games. Well, aside from watching the games, of course.

Yesterday during his introductory press conference, Curtis Granderson, created a firestorm of controversy when he said, “People have told me that true New Yorkers are Mets fans.”

Okay, so it wasn’t really a firestorm except in Michael Kay’s eyes. He apparently went off on Granderson during his radio show and made it a much bigger deal than it actually was. I see it two ways. 1) Granderson was just endearing himself to his new fanbase and 2) he obviously has no idea what he’s talking about.

The only thing it did was puff up the chests of a few Mets fans and they haven’t much reason to do that lately so let’s allow them at least that, shall we?

Anyway, it’s Day 3 of the Winter Meetings and when I woke up this morning, there was word that the Yankees could be working on a three-way trade involving Brett Gardner and Justin Masterson.

If that happens, we’ll be on it.
