Happy Opening Day, Everybody!

Or Happy Opening Day again if you were celebrating for the games yesterday.  I partook in the festivities at Miller Park in Milwaukee, the end of which was a satisfying 2-0 Brewers victory, so needless to say I’m operating at less than full strength this morning.  Because of that, I’m going to keep it short and sweet.  Here are 5 things I want to see from the Yankees in today’s season opener:

1) Derek Jeter hitting the ball hard

I don’t care if he goes 0-5 and doesn’t get on base once.  I just want to see him make some solid contact and hit the ball with a little oomph.  Jeter acknowledged that it took him a little longer than usual to get his swing together this spring and it still doesn’t look close to being all the way back.  A few line drives today would be a positive sign.

2) CC commanding his fastball down in the zone

The big guy has done a much better job of this so far this spring, and with the addition of the cutter he looks like he’ll be more than capable of living in the high 80s-low 90s.  The more he keeps the 4-seamer down at the knees and the more he hits his spots with it on the corners, the better off he’s going to be.

3) Jacoby Ellsbury running without issue

There’s nothing to suggest that he isn’t fully recovered from his sore calf.  He came through all his late spring MiL games without a problem and I don’t think Joe would have him in the lineup today if he wasn’t ready to go.  Seeing him fly around the outfield and on the basepaths will put to rest any lingering concerns about the condition of that calf.

4) Teix swinging the bat normally

The guy is making me nervous with all his talk about holding back on his swing and not feeling confident in the strength of his wrist.  The more he continues to hold back, the more I think he’s at risk of hurting himself.  If he’s going to get hurt again, I’d rather it come as a result of him swinging and playing normally than as a result of him compensating for something.

5) A win

Win the game.  It’s the Astros.  They suck.  There’s no reason for the Yankees to not win this game today and win it handily.  While the rest of the AL East is starting off the year beating up on each other, the Yankees get the benefit of a cupcake opener in Houston.  Take advantage of that and get the season started off on the right foot.

First pitch is a little over 10 hours away.  Baseball is officially back and I couldn’t be happier.  Let’s go Yankees!

Born in Dover, Delaware and raised in Danbury, Connecticut, Brad now resides in Wisconsin, where he regularly goes out of his way to remind Brewers fans that their team will never be as good as the Yankees. When he’s not writing for IIATMS and An A-Blog for A-Rod, he likes to spend his time incorporating “Seinfeld” quotes into everyday conversation, critiquing WWE storylines, and drinking enough beer to be good at darts.
