Everything was bad: Cardinals 6, Yankees 0

Ugh.

This is one of those games you just want to forget even happened because everything about it was bad: The offense (what offense?), the defense (two errors and other not-so-great plays), the pitching etc. Even worse, the Yankees helped Cards starter Lance Lynn record the first complete game shutout of his career. The Yankees were only able to muster five hits all night. Good job, everyone! Stellar!

  • The defense was so bad that Alfonso Soriano helped Allen Craig get a home run. He jumped up against the wall and the ball hit off his glove, over the wall. Oops. At least it wasn’t his head! (Hello, Jose Canseco!)
  • The infield was its usual putrid self. Kelly Johnson cannot play first base. Please get someone who can while Mark Teixeira is resting his bum wrist.
  • Alfredo Aceves came into the game after David Phelps exited and promptly gave up a home run to Matt Holliday and his popeye forearms. I know that Dellin Betances and Adam Warren need rest and that we don’t want them to turn into the second coming of Paul Quantrill and Scott Proctor but Aceves is really awful and after yesterday’s lucky outing, you knew lightning wouldn’t strike twice. Come on.
  • Poor Phelps, he was pitching in front of his family and his hometown and this happens. It was technically a QS (6 IP, 3ER) but thanks to the errors, he left with a 5-0 deficit.
  • Tomorrow is the finale of this really long road trip. I’m sure the Yankees will be thrilled for it to be over so they can have a day off before they face the Minnesota Twins at the Stadium.
