In today's installment of "this constitutes as important baseball news? really??" the player's union is investigating Jay-Z and Roc Nation. It seems Mr. Z gave Robinson Cano a $33,900 watch for his birthday and that is a violation of the following rule:
Section 5(B)(5)(a): "No Player Agent or Applicant shall provide, cause to be provided or promise to provide, any money or any other thing of value to any player, or any person related to or associated with such player, the purpose of which is to induce or encourage such player to use or continue to use any person's or firm's services as a Player Agent, Representative, or Draft Advisor.''
This rule is in place because the player's union doesn't want agents giving players gifts in order to retain them. It makes sense.
Maybe next time, Cano can lie and say he bought a gift for himself instead of posting the picture on Instagram and ratting out Jay-Z and his agency. Oops.
