Game 144 Quick Recap: Yanks 5 Rays 4

Young HR vs TB A more classic "if you turned this one off early, you missed out" game this could not have been.  This game was brutal for the first 8 innings.  But the Yankees kept plugging and turned a near no-hitter loss into a dramatic, improbable walk-off win in the span of 3 outs.

Let's just skip right to the good part.  Bottom 8th, 1 out, Chris Young at the plate.  Tampa starter Alex Cobb had no-hit the Yanks up to that point, allowing only 2 walks the inning prior.  Young doubled into left-center off him to break up the no-no and end his night, and Joe went to the ailing Martin Prado to try to put a run on the board against reliever Brad Boxberger.  Prado put 2 on with a big 2-run home run on a hanging changeup to make it a 4-2 deficit.

Jake McGee came on for the save in the 9th and immediately hit Chase Headley (in the grill) to put the leadoff man on.  Ichiro doubled to left to put the tying run in scoring position, Zelous Wheeler struck out, and up came Young again.  He fouled off the first pitch, a 98 MPH fastball, and apparently that was all he needed to time McGee up.  The next pitch came in at 97 and Young drove it out into the left field seats for the game-winning 3-run home run.  Unreal.

Game Notes:

- Michael Pineda wasn't especially great in his start.  He gave up all 4 runs on home runs by Yunel Escobar and the Rays got 10 hits off him in 7.1 innings.  He didn't walk anybody again though.  He has a 1.8% BB rate.

- Nice little 2-day run for Young.  5 hits, 2 HR, 4 R, and 5 RBI in 2 games.  Hopefully this doesn't lead to the Yankees offering him a 2-year/$13 million deal in the offseason.

- Give another call to the bullpen B-team for their "all hands in" work behind Pineda.  Rich Hill, Josh Outman, and Shawn Kelley combined for the final 5 outs.  Chaz Roe was there also.

- Injury note on Headley.  He stayed behind to get more X-rays and tests done to his jaw, where he took the McGee pitch in the 9th, when the team left for Baltimore.  He could be out this weekend.
