The walk-off loss in the day game was bad enough. The Yankees only scored 1 run on 1 swing in that game. Following it up with a shutout loss to Bud Norris in the nightcap was the rotten cherry on top of the poop-flavored sundae that was yesterday. Whatever lingering playoff hopes the Yanks had heading into yesterday, real or fictitious, are gone now. I won't waste more time on this recap than I need to because there wasn't much to talk about.
Bryan Mitchell got the spot start and actually didn't pitch bad. He was in and out of trouble in each one of his 5 innings, but he held the Orioles to 2 runs. They got to him in the 4th with a ribbie double by Ryan Flaherty and a triple by Alejandro De Aza. Leadoff walks will kill you and that's what they did to Mitchell in that inning. His final line was 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.
Bud Norris was made to look like Jim Palmer by the Yankee lineup. Derek Jeter and Brett Gardner were both back in action but it didn't matter. Norris held the Yanks to 3 singles in his 7 scoreless innings and erased a couple of leadoff walks in back-to-back innings. These guys suck. What else can you say?
Baltimore put the game out of reach in the later innings against the bullpen. David Phelps walked the bases loaded with 2 outs in the 7th and gave up a 2-run single to Delmon Young. De Aza tripled in a run again in the 8th. Yuck.
- This game marked the 4th time the Yankees have been shut out in their last 13 games. That's inconceivably awful.
- They're also 3-10 against the O's this year. Remember the days when they used to own them? Those were good days.
