Murphy wins the backup catcher job, Romine DFA

The big decision has been made, the Yankees have designated Austin Romine for assignment which means John Ryan Murphy will be Brian McCann's backup. Romine was the Yanks’ second-round draft pick in the 2007. He has a .275/.330/.407 line in just under 2,300 games in the minors.

But don't worry, all is not lost for Austin. The Yankees now have 10 days to trade him, release him or waive him and if he passes through waivers, he can go to triple A but not be on the 40-man roster. I think someone will probably want him because a few teams are in need of a backup catcher - I believe the Phillies were interested in him - and his situation mirrors Francisco Cervelli's who was traded by the Yankees to the Pirates in November.
