Mentioning Chris Capuano this morning made me realize we haven't really done any updates on his progress or the progress of other players who are banged up, out, rehabbing, etc. Let's remedy that now, shall we? - Jose Pirela was moved up to Double-A Trenton yesterday as he continues his rehab assignment. Via Chad Jennings, he played second base for the Thunder. Also, Chad's idea of Petit going down for Whitley tonight and then Whitley going down and Pirela coming off the DL to take his roster spot later in the week is something I would fully support.
(Editor's Note- Since this post was first drafted Petit has been optioned down, so it looks like that plan is already in motion.)
- Jacoby Ellsbury was back in the lineup and at the top of the order last night and I haven't read or heard anything about him after the game, so it sounds like that hip issue that kept him out for a game is a non-issue.
- Capuano started throwing sim games last week and threw his latest one yesterday against a team of Philly MiLers. For what it's worth, he pitched 4 scoreless innings and struck out 7. Mid-May is the current target time for his return.
- Ivan Nova also threw yesterday, throwing a 15-pitch simulated inning against some MiL hitters at the Tampa complex. Nova said he “felt awesome" afterwards and added, "I'm happy with the progress I’m making. Every pitch was right where I wanted it.” He could pitch in an ExST game next on Saturday.
- Brendan Ryan returned to game action yesterday, playing 5 innings at shortstop and picking up 2 hits in an ExST game. No timetable in place for his return from a calf strain, but I imagine the Yanks won't rush him.
