Game 24 Quick Recap: NYY 4 BOS 2

Hey, another series win.  How about that?  The Yankees kept on keeping on yesterday afternoon in game 2 of this weekend series in Boston, using strong pitching and just enough offense to take another from the Red Sox and set up the chance for a sweep in primetime tonight. Brett Gardner carried the offensive load for most of the game.  He doubled in the first run in the top of the 3rd to give the Yanks a 1-0 lead, and when Boston tied the game shortly after he put his team back ahead with a line drive, 2-out, 2-run single to left in the 5th to make it 3-1.

3 runs was enough for Nathan Eovaldi, who looked pretty good again as he continues to get molded into a complete pitcher.  He didn't rack up a ton of strikeouts, but he used his fastball well to get strikes and mixed offspeed stuff well to generate a lot of weak contact.  The only run he truly allowed came on Dustin Pedroia's leadoff homer in the bottom of the 4th, and Eovaldi only walked 1 batter.  6.2 innings of 2-run ball on the road is acceptable 102 times out of 100 and that's what Nasty Nate provided yesterday.

Chris Martin allowed an inherited runner to score before getting out of the 7th, Justin Wilson picked up a couple outs in the 8th, and Dellin Betances flat out embarrassed the Red Sox hitters with a 4-out save in which all 4 outs came on strikeouts.  Dude isn't real.  Guess that's why Joe still hasn't named an official closer.

Game Notes:

- Gardner's now at .319/.405/.420 on the year.  He should be in the lineup every single day as long as he's not hurt or sick.

- Nice day for Chris Young too.  2-4 with the insurance home run in the top of the 9th.  How is this the same guy who looked so horrible with the Mets last year?

- Another hit for Didi, who's slowly worked his way up to .221 on the year.  From what I read it seemed like he had a strong day in the field too.  Those A-Rod tutoring sessions must be rubbing off already.

- Teix and Big Mac took a combined 0-8 in the middle of the order.  They were the only guys who didn't get a hit.

- Betances threw 14 pitches yesterday.  He only needed 14 pitches to strike out 4 batters.  That's ridiculous.  He isn't human.
