Now before everyone panics because of the headline, Masahiro Tanaka had microscopic surgery on his right elbow. He did not, I repeat, he did not have Tommy John surgery. The Yankees announced the news of the surgery this afternoon via press release. It was performed by Dr. David Altchek at the hospital for special surgery and the procedure was to done to remove a bone spur that had been there since his pitching days in Japan. Tanaka's recovery, according to the release, will include 6 weeks of exercise/strengthening followed by a throwing program and he is expected to be ready for spring training.
