I have no amusing into for this recap. The Yankees stink and they're incapable of beating the Colorado Rockies in any park, American League or National.
Charlie Blackmon started off last night's game with a leadoff home run against Ivan Nova, and if that wasn't a sign of what was in store over the next 8 and a half innings, I don't know what is. Nova gave up 2 more runs in the 1st, another in the 2nd, one more in the 4th on another Charlie Blackmon home run, and he got charged with one in the 5th after giving up a leadoff double and a walk without recording an out. It was the latest in what is becoming a long string of poor starts by Nova and it should be his final start in a Yankee uniform.
To their credit, the offense tried to put up a fight to keep up with Nova's awful pitching as only they can. Alex Rodriguez drove in a run in the bottom of the 1st on a GIDP (#ProductiveOuts) and Didi Gregorius scored on a fielding error in the 2nd to make it 4-2. An A-Rod sac fly scored another run in the 5th and Didi tripled home the final run in the 6th, but by then Nova and Nick Goody had already done too much damage.
- Where do you even start with this one? Almost everybody and everything was terrible. Nova's outing (6 R in 4 IP), the A-Rod GIDP with 2 on and nobody out, a pair of fielding errors by Carlos Beltran and Rob Refsnyder, an 0-10 spot by the lineup with RISP, Beltran getting thrown out at second base on A-Rod's 5th inning sac fly, Nick Goody's continued existence as a Major League pitcher. If this was what Hal had in mind when he said "right smack in the middle of it", there should be no more debate about buying or selling at the deadline.
- 26 ER in 34 IP over Nova's last 6 starts. That's a 6.88 ERA. Somebody explain to me why he's still in the rotation and Severino hasn't been called back up. Please.
- Goody too. He's given up 7 ER on 13 hits, including 4 homers, in his last 10 appearances. I know there's not much to pick from in the Triple-A bullpen right now, but why not give somebody else a shot? It's not like Goody is ever in there for any important innings.
- A few positives from the game: Brett Gardner went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks, Didi had another 2-hit night and is up to .286/.317/.420 on the year, and Anthony Swarzak struck out the side in a perfect 9th inning.
