Game 57: Shoemaker vs. Tanaka

The Yankees have lost five of their last seven games, and have been outscored 34-22 in that stretch. Tanaka's last start was a solid effort against the Blue Jays, in which he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 6 IP. The team, of course, lost that game 7-0. The bullpen allowed five runs in 2 IP, the defense committed two errors, and the offense went 1-for-8 with RISP, and left nine runners on-base. That's a fairly representative effort of late.

Here's tonight's lineup:

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Brett Gardner, LF
  3. Carlos Beltran, RF
  4. Alex Rodriguez, DH
  5. Brian McCann, C
  6. Starlin Castro, 2B
  7. Didi Gregorius, SS
  8. Chase Headley, 3B
  9. Rob Refsnyder, 1B

Matt Shoemaker will look to continue his run of dominance against a struggling offense - and that felt as weird to type as it does to read. In his last three starts, Shoemaker has struck out 31 batters and walked none in 22.2 IP; it comes as no surprise, then, that he allowed just four runs in those outings. For comparison's sake, he pitched to the following line in his first seven starts - 29.2 IP, 42 H, 13 BB, 22 K, 7 HR, 8.49 ERA, .328 BAA. Here's hoping that Shoemaker shows up tonight.
