Is it time to admit that Michael Pineda simply isn't very good?
After Friday night's outing, Pineda owns a 97 ERA+ as a Yankee. Since the beginning of the 2015 season, he has pitched an 85 ERA+ over 261.0 IP. Over the last calendar year, 89 starting pitchers have thrown at least 150 IP. Among those, Pineda ranks 88th in HR/9, ERA, and ERA+. Folk keep pointing to his age (he's still only 27), previous success, and FIP (it's 1.49 below his ERA, which is fairly staggering), and suggesting (or hoping) that a turnaround is coming.
Unfortunately, for every step or two forward we see from Pineda (such as his solid month of June), we see a tumble backwards (such as his first two starts in July). So it goes.
Saturday's probable starters are Eduardo Rodriguez and fellow FIP-victim CC Sabathia. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM.
Sunday's action kicks off, of course, at 8:00 PM. It's a battle of the aces, with David Price squaring off against Masahiro Tanaka.
Have a great weekend everyone!
