The Yankees got Big Sexy'd, y'all. Bartolo Colon was on the mound for the Mets last night and he got the better of the Yankee lineup and Nathan Eovaldi, who got burned by one really bad inning.
That bad inning came in the top of the 5th, with the game scoreless after 4. Eovaldi had looked pretty sharp in the first 4, but he gave up a leadoff home run to Kelly Johnson to break the scoreless tie and it all snowballed from there. Curtis Granderson doubled with 1 out and Eovaldi made a terrible defensive decision to throw to second base AFTER looking C-Grand back on a comebacker. The runner was safe at first on the play and Jay Bruce socked a 3-run dinger with 2 outs to make sure all the potential damage from that play was done.
4 runs was plenty for Tolo and the Met 'pen. The only run charged to him came after he left the game in the 7th. With 2 outs and Gary Sanchez on second, Jerry Blevins came on and Aaron Hicks hit a ground ball single to center to plate the solitary Yankee run. They brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, but that run was represented by Rob Refsnyder and he didn't hit a 3-run homer to tie the game. I think I know a guy who might have had a better chance to do that...
- Seriously, how do you not pinch hit A-Rod in that situation in the 9th? If he's not going to be used in that scenario, why is he still on the roster? I get going younger and starting to work in the top prospects in preparation for next season, I'm totally on board with that. But I absolutely don't get what the Yankees are doing with A-Rod at all. Either play him or cut him. To do neither and willingly operate with a 24-man roster is idiotic. You owe him the money either way. Pay out, cut out, and move on. And that's coming from a diehard A-Rod fan.
- If it wasn't for the crappy 5th, Eovaldi would have had a pretty good night. Overall he was 7 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K.
- Sanchez DH'd last night and went 2-4 with the double serving as the team's only XBH. Jacoby Ellsbury also went 2-4.
- Adam Warren worked a scoreless 8th after Eovaldi. He's pitched 5 scoreless innings with 2 hits and 4 Ks in his 4 appearances since returning to the Yankees.
